North Macedonia is witnessing a growing shift towards green entrepreneurship, with businesses increasingly embracing sustainable practices and eco-innovation. Green entrepreneurial ventures play a crucial role in the country’s transition to a green economy, aligning with the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans and global sustainability goals.
The Rise of Green Entrepreneurship
In recent years, startups and small businesses in North Macedonia have begun integrating renewable energy, waste reduction, and sustainable production into their business models. Sectors such as organic farming, eco-tourism, sustainable fashion, and recycling initiatives are gaining momentum, demonstrating the potential of green enterprises to drive both environmental and economic benefits.
Opportunities and Challenges
Government initiatives, EU funding, and regional projects support the growth of green businesses, providing training, financial incentives, and networking opportunities. However, access to green financing, regulatory barriers, and market awareness remain challenges that entrepreneurs must navigate. Strengthening public-private partnerships and fostering a green entrepreneurial ecosystem is key to long-term success.
At the Western Balkans Summit in Sofia on 10 November 2020, North Macedonia, together with other countries in the region, signed the Green Agenda Declaration, aligned with the European Green Deal. This strategic document aims to accelerate the environmental and economic transformation, with a focus on tackling climate change, sustainable energy and the circular economy.
As a signatory, North Macedonia is working to implement measures that support the green transition. The government, the private sector and civil society organizations are actively involved in:
- Increasing the use of renewable energy sources
- Reducing pollution and waste through a circular economy
- Supporting green entrepreneurship and innovation
- Advancing environmental protection policies
Women as Drivers of Green Change
Women entrepreneurs in North Macedonia are increasingly leading the way in sustainable business initiatives, particularly in social enterprises, circular economy startups, and eco-friendly innovations. Supporting their participation in green ventures is essential for inclusive and long-term economic development.
Green entrepreneurial ventures are not just a trend but a necessity for a resilient and sustainable economy. By fostering innovation and sustainability, North Macedonia can strengthen its competitive position while contributing to global environmental goals.
